I laugh because I've already heard that quote a significant number of times, thank you. Oh yes, and you're an idiot. Pfft. Unless you aren't. Pfah. Pfeh. PfKARELh.

I want to see some improvement around here!!
Gonna do lots of drawing for at least three days to see if I can get a better grasp of really basic things. During this time I'm not going to draw anything from imagination (except this art trade I have XD); just from life and figure drawing photos. I really don't have much experience drawing from life, so it should be interesting...

Today I've already done a fair bit: a few pages of 30-second gesture drawings (trying to focus on legs/pelvis to figure out weight), random household/café objects, including a long table so that I could try obvious perspective in real life, some hands and some longer figure drawings from photos. I've already learnt a surprising amount!

While drawing hands, I got really frustrated by the fact that I always start drawing the wrist and palm first, then make the fingers in proportion to each other but way bigger than they should be, so I tried to figure out why this might be. Still not sure about that, but I did have more success trying to look at the edges of everything and drawing that instead of thinking about what I was doing anatomically. I feel this could be quite a useful skill to develop, especially in life drawing, as it eliminates the need to work out perspective (basically just makes everything like drawing from photos) and is useful for shapes. It does, however, also make everything I draw look really flat XD
I found the longer figure drawings to be quite useful in trying out different methods of approaching the drawings themselves. Got pretty frustrated when I was trying to just do an exact copy with detailed lines, using the edge-drawing trick, as my anatomy just isn't there enough yet and everything came out looking really stiff. I'm quite happy with the last three I did, though, abysmal line quality aside (not gonna focus on that over the next three days, I'm more using the figure drawing to help me with anatomy).
I'd like to move away from using outlines during my practice (when I sketch things it's usually a mix of super loose lines and crosshatching to get the shape of things, which I quite like), but I think that might have to come later after I'm more secure with the more basic things. Outlines are so boring.

Hopefully my boyfriend wakes up before I go to bed, in which case I plan to draw him for a bit ^^

Biro funtimes
I had to take a photo of this with my webcam, which is... basically the reason I don't do much traditional art any more despite preferring it absolutely :/ Part of today's messingaround sketches, which have all been done in biro over the past few days because I've been too lazy to find a pencil. Drawing glass bottles with a pen is surprisingly fun...

I spent ages trying to figure out how fighting with a double-bladed lightsaber/saberstaff would work, for Anark reference purposes, and drawing lots of poses from Phantom Menace stills and bo instructional videos. I'm really enjoying trying to give her her own fighting style, even if proper references are ridiculously hard to come by (I wanted her to be less fluid/technically good of a fighter than Darth Maul, more straightforwardly aggressive like Savage Opress, but still maintain believability that she's actually been trained in fighting. Some of the animated stuff looks... off in that regard, especially with obvious things like how Savage holds his lightsaber. The search continues.) I've also taken the opportunity, while I'm doing all these poses, to try and pay special attention to centres of gravity, and have learned some handy things about the pelvis XD

I've also been drawing more scenes with two or more characters in (although they're all so tiny I don't even have room to draw faces), which is helping me get relative proportions down a little better and to start drawing simple backgrounds. The more I draw inanimate objects, the more I'm starting to enjoy doing it... perfect ^^

Overall, I think what I've been doing is a step in the right direction! I probably need to go back to basics and study the absolute fundamentals, but I'm putting it off for as long as possible because it's Not Fun. Doing this is still way better than drawing Vacant Pretty Person #574 Staring Into Space, haha.

Oops by myrmidon-mage
Oops
I was drawing a couple of screencaps of Adam Driver laughing during the SNL sketch outtakes, then that shot where Kylo Ren and Hux are walking next to each other because it was the only picture I could find of the inside of a new Star Destroyer, then I got bored of drawing Kylo and decided to just do a silly doodle with my tablet.

And then this happened anyway.

I'm going to put the pen down now...

what a mess DX by myrmidon-mage
what a mess DX
So I spent enough time on this to add it to my Scraps, even if I'm really not happy with the way it turned out. Learnt a couple of things anyway, even if drawing this kind of scene competently is way above my current skill level :/

I seem to have started shading things by drawing shadow shapes and then filling them in in solid colours. Probably not a good idea.

For reasons unknown I've decided to bring this account back to life.

And naturally I was wondering... how've you been for the past 2 years!?
Or maybe we should simplify that to "How are you?"
